چکیده

All human beings are "endowed with reason." This assumption is the basis of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as clearly expressed in its very first article. Obviously the authors of the declaration had not considered the particular case of the process of parturition, when there is no room for rational means of expression. One cannot interpret literally the irrational language of some women in hard labor, as soon as the neocortical control has been eliminated: "Kill me...shoot me... let me die...do anything...etc." On the other hand, for obvious reasons, the baby cannot rationally express his or her point of view. However, it frequently happens that decisions must be made during childbirth. Who can make such decisions? And based on which criteria?

Intrapartum Administration of Synthetic Oxytocin and Downstream Effects on Breastfeeding: Elucidating Physiologic Pathways

The importance of breastfeeding as a public health priority has increased as new research reinforces the health benefits to both mother and nursling, even continuing years after weaning. However, many women do not nurse as long as they intend. Birth practices such as labor medications and the routine separation of mother and baby are two of the several intrapartum influences on breastfeeding ou...

The cardiovascular effects of oxytocic drugs.

The effects of ergometrine 0.5 mg i.v. and of synthetic oxytocin 5 units i.v. on the alpha and the beta adrenoceptive blood vessels of the foreann have been studied by means of volume-pulse plethysmography in 40 gynaecological patients. Ergometrine constricted the alpha and the beta blood vessels. It is thought that the widespread vasoconstriction may precipitate post-partum hypertension or pul...

Association of Using Oxytocin during Labor and Breastfeeding Behaviors of Infants within Two Hours after Birth

Background: Opioids are used to relieve pain during labor and may affect the neurobehavioral conditions of infants. However, effects of using drugs, such as oxytocin, as a routine component of pre- and post-delivery care on the breastfeeding behaviors of newborns remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the maternal use of oxytocin during labor and breastfe...

Vasopressin and oxytocin mRNA regulation in the rat assessed by hybridization with synthetic oligonucleotides.

Vasopressin and oxytocin are nonapeptide hormones that regulate water metabolism and lactation, respectively. To study the regulation of the vasopressin and oxytocin genes at the mRNA level, we constructed a series of synthetic oligonucleotides, from 8 to 15 bases in length, for use in filter-blot hybridization assays (Northern blots) of hypothalamic mRNA levels and for primed synthesis of cDNA...
